Any “normal” response to this video would typically be “WTF” yet according to the Facebook and YouTube comments (mostly male) seem to react to the sensuality and sexuality Showry’s character plays. Her goal is to stray the male gaze from hyper sexualizing Asian women by making these strangely addicting videos which she calls “feminist shock comedy”. Each video posted show’s her in a risqué outfit often depicting new characters and scenes such as her forcefully making out with a boxing mannequin, dressed up as the little mermaid eating octopus tentacles or her teaching you how to watch a movie by rubbing food and coke all over herself.
While at first glance these short videos are hilarious and seriously addicting, many of us are blind to the message Showry is trying to send. Her videos are used as a mockery to the webcam culture present in Korea called mukbang – a type of camming where usually sexy girls lifestream themselves eating massive amounts of food. Mukbang has brought many Koreans to great fame and is considered a type of pornography, which Showry had only discovered in the past year.
Although her intention lies in distracting men from oversexualizing Asian women, the comments others make on her videos state otherwise reading things such as “I have the weirdest boner” and “I don’t know who has bigger problems her for making this video or me …….. for masterbating to it”.
In response to EVERYONE’S huge question, “WHY?!”, Showry responded in a tweet:
companies request interview but I don’t know if I want stick to Korea media 🤔 or not ruin mystery of showry personality🙄
— Showry – 쇼리 (@sshowry) January 6, 2016
Her mystery seems like it will continue to linger as she later tweeted: “My videos don’t need grand a purpose or message. They are not understood, they are just for fun. if you find personal inspiration, good for you.”
